WHY DO I NEED A KNEE BRACE?

First and foremost, a knee brace can reduce the chances of knee injuries happening in the first place. The hinges on the side of a knee brace allow the knee to bend and straighten through its full range of motion while providing support to the MCL and LCL. A knee brace can prevent your knee from bending or extending beyond its natural range, thereby significantly reducing the risk of damaging your ligaments and other structures of the knee from hyperextension. It can also absorb some of the impact from a crash or fall, reducing the shock to your knee.

Second, a knee brace can provide functions your knee has lost due to previous injuries. Used properly, it can reduce instability and provide support that is lacking. At the same time it can decrease the risk of re-injury or injury to other parts of the knee. For those who have had an ACL graft, a knee brace can reduce the stress on it significantly.

HOW DO I KNOW THAT’S TRUE?

A recent study performed at the Sanders Clinic for Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine in Houston, Texas concluded that the use of protective knee braces lowers the risk of knee injuries. Researchers conducted an online poll which qualified 2,115 off-road motorcycle riders who supplied data over the course of one year. The study concluded that the most common knee injuries in off-road motorcycling involve the anterior cruciate ligament, menisci, and medial collateral ligament. The use of prophylactic knee bracing appears to have a beneficial effect in preventing medial collateral ligament and anterior cruciate ligament injuries as well as overall knee injury occurrence. These findings may be applicable to other sports that involve similar forces and mechanics.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE HINGE?

The motion of the hinge is extremely important to how well the brace protects. The goal is for the hinge to match the natural motion of the knee as closely as possible. The patented EVS Tru-Motion hinge series (TM5+) enables any EVS brace to stay suspended on the leg in the intended position during the full range of motion. The axis point of the human knee is fluid, meaning it migrates forward as the knee bends. The EVS Tru-Motion hinge mimics this movement to keep the knee protected at any position.
